I can still remember being confused about the concept of lead horses a few years ago, when taking horse riding lessons. There was always one horse that refused to stand anywhere but in the front of the riding group, but that isn’t what surprised me. Not only did this horse refuse to lead, but when he was in the group, every other horse refused to do anything but follow. They had an incredible sense of respect and trust for the lead horse to navigate the route, which is what essentially made it their leader. And guess what? This horse got the most food, the most number of mates, the most number of trophies, etc.
My opinions about leadership can be explained by a very simple quote -
“There are 3 types of people on this planet – Talkers, Doers, and Leaders”.
Leaders are men and women of their word, who consistently meet the verbal agreements and commitments they make, sometimes even surpassing expectation, but never falling short of them.
I am sure you all know that person who can’t stop talking about how much he has accomplished, and can’t stop acting like Mr/Mrs. Know it all. i.e. The Talkers. If you are one of those types, listen to what Socrates had to say – ‘I only know one thing, and that is that I know nothing’. Life is an eternal journey of discovery and progress, which will be halted either the second you think you know it all, or when you die. If one of the smartest men in history himself said he knew nothing in the grand scheme of things, what makes you or me think we know it all?
The talkers also involve those people who keep talking (Guess that was rather obvious), but never seem to actually take any action. “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, We Must Do” – Bruce Lee
The next type of person we know are the doers, who always face a lot more success than the talkers, usually an infinite times more, but these people are not necessarily men/women of their word. Most people that only do, tend to avoid any verbal commitments in fear that they might not reach them, and even go as far as talking themselves down in front of others, to reduce expectations. People like this are no different from Braggarts, since neither are men or women of their word.
In order to be a leader, when you speak or make any commitments, the people around you should have no doubt that you will FOLLOW THROUGH. You should become RELIABLE. Like Eric Thomas says, every word spoken requires a thousand actions. Do you have any idea how many reps you will have to perform in the gym to become a pro athlete? Do you have any idea how many prospects you will talk to in your Network Marketing business before making money? Do you have any idea how many books you will have to read before you become that man/women of your dreams?
Most of us feel a sense of fulfillment, just by talking about what we are going to do, as if it is already done. Talk, but FOLLOW THROUGH. When you say you will take a phone call at so and so time, get ready 5 minutes ahead of time. When you tell people that join your business that they can rely on you for support, you better be there when they need you. Talking is easy, but doing is hard. Doing both simultaneously, consistently, is even harder.
TRUST is one of the most important qualities of a leader, and you must EARN it. Become a Man/Women of your word. Don’t be afraid to tell people exactly what you are, but don’t do this all the time, and ALWAYS be ready to back up your words with results. Remember, ‘Champions aren’t made in the ring, they are merely recognized there’.
